This weekend was an active one in the northeast corner of the Prince George Fire Centre.
According to Fire Information Officer Marg Drysdale, there were approximately 9,000 lightning strikes in the area.
“We’re continuing to see some of that lightning through the day.”
Drysdale added there’s been nine new fire starts since Friday.
“Most of those are in areas that are fairly remote,” she said.
“We also had a new fire start which was approximately seven kilometres northeast of Altona, but it was on the east side of the Beatton River.”
The fire is 18.5 hectares and is considered out of control, but Drysdale said crews were able to get on it quickly.
As temperatures are expected to rise before the weekend, Drysdale said there could be potential for more starts through lightning holdovers.
“These are lightning strike that have happened over the long weekend,” Drysdale said.
“Once they start to get a little heat on them, we will likely start to see some of those popping up, we will have patrols out in the area, we will be looking for them.”
Drysdale adds they’re still asking the public if they see any columns of smoke to report them as quickly as they can.
