Cougars acquire local product in trade with Lethbridge

A familiar face on the ice in Prince George will once again be dawning the Cougar crest.

The Prince George Cougars acquired 16-year-old forward Fischer O’Brien from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for 17-year-old defenceman and former first-round bantam pick Tyson Phare.

O’Brien, who’s a native of the Northern Capital, played this past season with the Cariboo Cougars in the B.C. Major Midget League.

He collected two goals and five assists for seven points in 40 games, as he helped the Cougars capture the BCMML championship.

O’Brien is the younger brother of former Prince George Cougar Brogan O’Brien.

“We’re thrilled to add a player that comes from a great family that has strong ties to the organization and community,” said General Manager Mark Lamb. “His brother enjoyed a very successful career in Prince George, and we’re excited to have Fischer now join the fold.”

O’Brien was originally selected by the Hurricanes in the fifth round, 98th overall, in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

Northern B.C. was sure to be showcased on Thursday’s WHL Bantam Draft.

Prince George minor hockey player Nico Myatovic was selected in the 6th round, 119th overall by the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Max Sanford of Williams Lake went one pick earlier, 118th to the Kelowna Rockets.

Both Myatovic and Sanford played for Prince George based North Central Bobcats that won the provincial bantam hockey championship this year in the Northern Capital.
