Church answers Freedom call

There’s a new addition to Prince George’s skyline in the form of a 100-foot cell tower with a huge white cross on it.

The tower was just recently installed by Shaw owned Freedom Mobile on the property of Lakewood Alliance Church on 5th and Ospika.

The church itself has been in the community for over 50 years, and Pastor Dave Driedger said he was a bit taken aback by the amount of buzz it’s created.

“It’s always surprising when something like a cell tower creates all these conversations, it’s something I never anticipated would happen. But it’s been a cool opportunity to talk with some people about why we’re here and what we’re about.”

According to him, it was actually Freedom Mobile’s idea to paint the cross on the structure.

“It’s obviously big, and it’s always hard to imagine what it’s going to look like from drawings, but as far as cell towers go, I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. Having the shrouding covering up all the equipment inside is a little bit more visually appealing and I think the cross turned out great.”

The new addition is also helping the church out financially, as their building came up in the 60’s and could use a little TLC, but Driedger said it’s fair if some people think it’s a bit of an eyesore right now.

“I get anything that stands out like that in our city and is new is going to feel that way because it’s new and it’s different. My hope is that it will start to blend into the landscape a little bit and not really be an offense to anyone.”
