Para Nordic flags flying high thanks to carpentry students

By Ethan Ready

The flags were raised just over a week ago, as the World Para Nordic Skiing Championships got underway in Prince George.

Those same flags will be kept flying up until the conclusion of the closing ceremonies on Sunday (February 24) thanks in large part to the carpentry students from College of New Caledonia.

CNC’s entry-level carpentry program has often allowed its students the opportunity to work on projects benefiting different aspects of the community.

A full piece of timber was delivered to the school prior to the beginning of the championships, giving the students their first project in figuring out how to cut down the trunk to manageable pieces for the project.

“It’s pretty amazing to be a part of a foundation program and have access to projects like this,” said carpentry student Ming Wu.

“Any way we can gain more experience while delivering a token to the community is fantastic.”

All of the work the students put forth for the project goes towards the 480 hours required towards their apprenticeship.

Instructor Chris Kelly says he enjoys inspiring his students by showing them how capable they are when it comes to projects like this, adding, “if we’re able to give back to the community while doing that, that’s always a positive too.”
