Several First Nations communities across BC are doing their part to reduce their reliance on diesel fuels and look into renewable energy projects.
The Wuikinuxv Nation located near Port Hardy, the Penticton Indian band, and the Nadleh Whut’en located near Fort Fraser are among a group of communities doing their part by conducting feasibility studies for hydroelectric resources as well as wind power.
Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, John Rustad – says the government of BC is doing its part to help support these ambitions:
“..and certainly we understand First Nations are very interested in clean energy, [and] we are certainly trying to facilitate opportunities for First Nations to be part of that”
The $5.7 million dollar First Nations clean energy fund has been designed to increase First Nations participation in the clean energy bid and will help to support new jobs and economic opportunities throughout BC.
