Cold weather allows Ice Oval to reopen

Old man winter is hitting us with a cold spell but that means good things for skaters in Prince George.

The chilly temperatures are allowing the Ice Oval to be open again. In the three days it has been open so far this year, 532 skaters have taken advantage.

“Now the immediate stretch of about two weeks looks very good. That puts a little emphasis on our long-range plans to have the oval refrigerated, which would mean we can skate at ten above freezing,” explained Dick von Eugen, one of the originators of the oval and helps maintain it.

“The project has gone from unfunded with the City to a funded project. This means the City will go, on our behalf, to Ottawa and see if they can get a grant, much like they did with the Masich Place Stadium.”

Von Eugen said the City was initially rejected for refrigeration funding but is hopeful a second attempt can be successful.
