The City of Prince George is looking at the new parkade and condo project next to City Hall as an opportunity to upgrade existing infrastructure at capacity, in poor condition, or at high risk of failure.
An old water main in front of City Hall was replaced as part of the excavation along 7th Avenue. The cast iron pipe was about 60 years old and had been rated as “very high risk” for failure by the City. A new sewer line is being installed across Queensway and along Lower Patricia to provide additional capacity for further downtown growth. The City has also replaced and rerouted the storm water piping system, as well as upgrading and rerouting the sanitary sewer. Crews also removed decommissioned infrastructure from underground, including remnants of an old wooden pipe used to distribute water years ago.
Construction has involved weaving new infrastructure through existing pipes, the Downtown Renewable Energy System, and services from other utilities. Services had to be maintained while work was underway in all cases.
The 6th and George, and 7th and Dominion intersections are expected to reopen in about a month. An extension of the district energy system will be added to the new parkade next year.
