It will be more than just a hockey game when the Prince George Cougars host the Swift Current Broncos this weekend.
Minor Sports Day is on Sunday, the first featured game of the season, and all teams in attendance are encouraged to wear their jerseys.
The Cougars will have something special in store for one of the clubs as well.
“The team that brings the most people in their group, we’re going to donate $500 bucks back to that team and some of the teams are excited about that because its hard to fund raise and so five hundred bucks, you get to come to a game, get some recognition and you could walk away with some money too,” said Andy Beesley, Vice President of Business.
While hockey remains top of mind, they want to be as inclusive as possible.
“We’re not just looking at it from a hockey point of view, we want to involve the entire community whether its figure skating, soccer, lacrosse, football, baseball or anything we just think it is an excellent opportunity to honor all sports teams in Prince George and quite frankly have a little bit of fun with them.
The WHL club, which is celebrating 25 years in the northern capital, is often looked upon by minor sports clubs to offer guidance on this topic.
“A lot of minor sports teams reach out to the Cougars to try and help out with fundraising and different ideas and they want to be at our games sometimes to sell raffle tickets and so on, our process essentially is to sit down as a staff and talk about how we can promote our games and get people to come to our games do good. We know that people like supporting the Cougars because we’re also trying to support the community.”
Beesley adds all teams will be recognized on the big screen.
Puck-drop is at 2PM from the CN Centre.
