Enrollment numbers for School District 57 (SD57) rose slightly as of September 30th compared to the same time last year. There are currently 13,009 students enrolled, up from 12,974.
Superintendent Marilyn Marquis-Forster, while noting challenges with capacity, says the increase is not necessarily a bad thing.
“The bulk of tax dollars that flow to us through the Ministry of Education are based on the enrollments within the district. So when districts are holding their own, or even growing slightly, there’s real financial stability as far as funding coming from the people of British Columbia,” she continues, saying capacity is always a difficult subject.
“Children in households tend not to come evenly distributed across all geography within a city, so there is always some variation there. There will be a little room in one building and another building feeling a bit of a pinch.”
Two of these schools that could feel “a bit of a pinch” are Springwood Elementary, which recently had two portables installed, and Heritage Elementary.
