Update as of 6 am Thursday – YXS says their navigation system has been repaired and flights are now mostly arriving and departing on time, with a few delays due to heavy snowfall.

Flights in and out of YXS were delayed and cancelled early Wednesday due to a malfunction with their weather navigation system.
This came just hours before Environment Canada and Air Canada issued warnings over a major snowfall headed for Prince George that threatened to dump up to 25 cm. of snow by Thursday morning.

Air Canada flight 8213 got in safe tonight at 12:47. Nav Canada’s technician arrived just before midnight and is out there working. He is expected to work throughout the night to fix the issue with the Automated Weather Observation System.

Central Mountain Air and WestJet have cancelled all flights in and out of Prince George today due to the weather advisory and Nav Canada’s equipment malfunction. The Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS), a device used to record weather, is not fully functioning.
The replacement part has made it to Prince George safely, however due to the recent flight cancellations, a Nav Canada technician is still a few hours away from Prince George. He is expected to arrive late tonight and will start working on the equipment right away.
The AWOS records critical information for the safety of flight including ceiling height, sky condition, altimeter setting, wind direction and speed, temperature and dew point. Nav Canada is working very hard to restore the service and hope to have the system back up and running as soon as possible.
