PG’s Brett Connolly to skip White House visit if invited

Brett Connolly of Prince George | Washington Capitals

It’s typically tradition for a championship-winning sports team in the United States to visit the White House.

In the case of Prince George’s Brett Connolly, he’s now publicly stated will not go with the Washington Capitals should US President Donald Trump extend an invitation.

At a BioSteel Sports Camp news conference, the 26-year-old said his decision is not based on politics.

“For me, I just don’t think it’s the right thing to do,” stated Connolly.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think there’ll be a few guys not going too. Like I said, it has nothing to do with politics, it’s about what’s right and wrong, and we’ll leave it at that.”

Connolly becomes the second Capital to publicly decline a possible White House visit alongside Devante Smith-Pelly, who has criticized President Trump’s “racist and sexist” remarks over the summer.

The Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup earlier this year with Connolly assisting on the game-winning goal in Game Five against the Vegas Golden Knights.

He brought the Cup back to Prince George on August 20th.
