Asay with an ace performance on the mound

Amanda Asay of Prince George pitched a gem in helping Canada to a 5-0 victory today (Tuesday) over Venezuela at the Women’s Baseball World Cup in Florida.

The 30-year-old Asay tossed a complete game one-hitter.

“Our defence was awesome today,” said Asay following the game in a Baseball Canada news release. “I was pitching to contact and they kept making the plays behind me which is a huge confidence boost on the mound.”

She had one strikeout and just one walk over seven innings.

“This is the type of performance that we’re coming to expect out of Amanda every time she takes the mound,” said Canadian Manager André Lachance. “She’s pitched in so many big games for us over the years and has achieved great success and today was no different.”

Asay’s only other appearance came in Canada’s 10-7 round robin victory over Cuba on Thursday where she allowed seven runs, four of them earned.

Canada improved its Super Round record to 2-1 and will be back on the field against the United States Wednesday (3PM PT) and Chinese Taipei Thursday (10AM).

The Bronze and Gold medal games will be played Friday.
