UNBC to host Youth Forum Saturday

Prince George residents can have their say on what they think should be included in Canada’s new youth policy.

A forum is being organized by UNBC student Karista Olson who has previous experience participating in larger session; such as the Canadian International Model United Nations session in March in Ottawa, the UN Youth Assembly Winter Session in New York City in February, and the UN Peacebuilders Conference in Vancouver in November 2017.

Olson hopes this will not only benefit the youth in the north but open the doors to other discussions.

“We are hoping that through this session we aren’t just able to contribute meaningfully to the creation of this policy, but to also foster engagement and continue a conversation that young people in Prince George will continue.”

Olson would like to see the government focus on providing more representation for Northerners, especially with the rapid growth of indigenous youth.

“The six teams being approached by this process, Health and wellbeing, Environment and Climate Change, Justice for Human Rights, Jobs and the Economy, International Assistants and Affairs. These are all realms that we are, and have been, underrepresented in forever.”

All the feedback from the forum will be compiled into a national report and submitted to the Privy Council Office’s Youth Secretariat.

The forum is slated for Saturday, August 18th in Room 6-205/211 at UNBC’s Conference Centre and Northern University Student Centre from 11AM to 2PM.

Registration can be found here.
