Last year’s wildfires a main contributor to higher crime rate: Supt. Warren Brown

Prince George RCMP Superintendent Warren Brown isn’t surprised the Northern Capital has climbed the ranks in the Crime Severity Index (CSI).

Statistics Canada released their CSI numbers for populations per 10,000 where Prince George jumped from 17th to 11th from 2016 to 2017.

Brown says hearing those numbers can be discouraging but he remains optimistic for this year.

“We have strategic initiatives. We have a very good relationship with a number of entities in the community and collaborative approaches all focused on reducing crime. So far, I can say after six months our property crime stats are down significantly from last year.”

He contributes the rise in crime from the growing population during the wildfires last year.

“Some of those individuals increased the criminal rate in our downtown core. We specifically saw a rise in property crimes. As well, because of the homicide that required large resourcing to front-end load those investigations we didn’t typically have our target teams.”

Brown says the CSI rankings change drastically through the year and believes PG won’t be sitting 11th when this years numbers are released.
