Outside and unplugged from technology.
That’s the message of a new initiative from the BC Parks Foundation this weekend, conducting 100 walks in 100 parks, including Cottonwood Island in Prince George, and encouraging stronger connections with nature instead of stronger connections with screens.
BC Parks Foundation spokesperson Jennie McCaffrey says local residents will be guided by a local healthcare provider during the Saturday morning event.
She believes the modern world is preventing the younger generation from seeing the real beauty around them.
“Canadian kids watch an average of seven-and-a-half hours of screen time every day, which is just crazy and I would love to switch that number to outside time. It’s not just for kids too; there are huge benefits for kids as far as everything from academics and other resources, but it’s the same for adults as well. It’s never too late.”
With the foundation only been in place for six months, McCaffrey hopes this kickstarter campaign can help connect communities with their local outdoor recreation areas.
“It’s a way to pull some focus into those local communities, give them an opportunity to get out there, and see how much fun it is. We want everyone just to have a fabulous time, get together, share some stories, and share their love of nature.”
The walk takes place tomorrow, beginning at 10AM, as part of Parks Day across BC.
