According to the Ministry of Health, between 4 per cent and 10 per cent of seniors will experience some form of abuse in their life.
That’s why the Prince George Community Response Network is wearing purple and walking to promote World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
“The key thing is to have people in our community aware,” says Wendy Brophy, Chair of the CRN. “Having communities keep people safe so when we have all of our community members watching out for those who are vulnerable in our community that’s how we keep people safe.”
Brophy added most of the time elder abuse is gone unreported because individuals don’t recognize when it’s happening.
“Noticing someone may not be doing that well or someone seems to be bot friends with someone and they are sort of tagging along, that can be a sign. Lots of people in their own homes can be taken advantage of family members sometimes.”
This is the 4th year the Walk for Awareness of Abuse and Neglect of Vulnerable Adults has taken place in PG.
