River levels causing more mosquitoes to emerge

Prince George is right in the middle of peak mosquito season.

This summer is predicted to be one of the worst years when it comes to the blood sucking insects. The reason is due to how much water has been left over from snow melt.

“People that live closer to the river are probably going to find there is more mosquito, only because of the river levels,” says Claire Watkins, Integrated Pest Management Foreman. “A lot of our snow-melt mosquitoes have already been dealt with, but the river levels and the way they are fluctuating is having an impact.”

Although we are seeing more of the bug, there’s no need to worry about contracting any diseases or viruses added Watkins.

“It use to be West Nile Virus and they kind of ruled that out for us because of our physical location and as well as having a shorter summer compared to down south. The Zika virus that everyone is talking about, like down in Mexico, we don’t have that type of mosquito up here.”

She adds if you plan to travel to foreign countries it’s a good idea to know what the insect can transfer to you.

April, May and June are the worst months for mosquitoes.
