New, annual, fundraising event aimed to benefit arts community in PG

Local arts organizations have come together to announce a new fundraiser to support the art community in Prince George.

The Mayor’s Black & White Ball for the Arts was created by The Community Arts Council, the PG Symphony Orchestra, and Theatre NorthWest, in an effort to raise money and to establish a new grant for local organizations in the city.

This event will include dinner, dancing, entertainment representing both performing and visual arts, and a silent auction.

“What this means is, we are going to be brining together different groups of people to put on this event and raise awareness for how important the community arts are,” says Sean Farrell, Executive Director of the Community Arts Council.

Canadian Tire is the top sponsor of the event and has already contributed $10,000.

“The arts community needs constant support,” says Selen Alpay, Canadian Tire store owner. “There’s never enough funding for them. What we are hoping is to introduce a new group of people to the arts community, possibly some younger people, to create more exposure.”

The event was in talks for a while, but because of the wildfire they delayed it.

“It was decided by the organizing group to hold off until the spring,” says Mayor Lyn Hall. “There was just too much on the go last fall, with us getting through the evacuation of all the people effected by the wildfire.”

This new, annual event will kick off May 26th at the Coast Inn of the North.

Tickets for Mayor’s Black & White Ball for the Arts are on sale now and are available at Theatre NorthWest or by calling (250)-649-6477.
