A harrowing experience for one of our Members of Parliament, Wednesday.
Bob Zimmer, the MP for Prince George and Peace River says it was business as usual at their regular weekly caucus meeting, until he heard the sound of gunfire just before 7 a.m., Pacific.
Zimmer was placed in lock-down for several hours with every other MP on the Hill at the time, but the situation came to an end when the gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was killed by Sergeant-At-Arms Kevin Vickers.
“Here’s a guy that’s not just ceremonial, that’s part of his job, he’s the real deal,” Zimmer says.
“I went up and thanked him [Thursday] and said ‘You’re the real deal’.”
Zimmer says Thursday was an emotional day to resume sitting in the House of Commons, but admits everyone wanted to get back to work as soon as they could.
“Because we certainly weren’t going to be intimidated, we’re going to continue on with our business at hand and not let terrorism scare us or affect our democracy,” he says.
