A world renowned “death coach” was in Prince George yesterday speaking to area doctors about mortality.
Stephen Garret has written three books on the subject and says western cultures are in denial about many aspects of death;
“We’ve gotten out of the practice of being with death in a more open and respectful way. We are just quite frightened of it. So what happens is we don’t talk about it our families, we don’t talk about it with our doctors. We just kind of pretend it’s not there and hope it will go away.”
He says death is a big part of our journey;
“I used to be a life coach, and I realized that a very important and large part of life is dealing with death. And we don’t do it very well here in North America”
He used the example of death being represented by the grim reaper of the dark attitudes we have in the west towards our mortality.
His most recent book “When Death Speaks” is available on Amazon now.
