Shaw Communications announces buyout in major operation shift

Calgary-based Shaw Communications is offering buyout packages to 6,500 of its employees, which could result in over 600 job losses.

The communications giant made the announcement today saying it wants to reduce its compliment of customer service staff and move towards online resources or smart phone apps along with self-installed services.

“Customers want their services from Shaw to be just like everything else in their life – delivered quickly, reliably, and on their terms,” said Jay Mehr, President, Shaw Communications. “But as good as our customer service and operations are today, we see that we have to make some significant changes to serve customers the way they expect to be served in 2018 and beyond.”

Shaw is starting a voluntary buyout program, which will begin tomorrow, for selected employees to give them the opportunity to think critically about their future.

In Prince George there are roughly 30 employees. When we reached out to the company they wouldn’t comment.
