Pacific Western Brewing handed out a bursary to local athlete Avril Harris today as a part of their Hometown Heroes Program.
The wheelchair basketball star says the $2000 grant will be a big help;
“I’m going to end up using it for travel as living up here in the north does cost quite a bit in terms of having to travel down to Vancouver where most of the tournaments and training camps are”
Avril has competed in 2 previous Canada Winter Games and hopes to qualify at the end of the month so he can compete in front of the home crowd next year;
“It’s going to be awesome. If I make the team; being in my home town with the stands filled with people I know. It’s going to be a great feeling, a lot more excitement than the last two games just because of that reason. Hopefully I can bring home the gold in front of everybody”
Avril is currently a volunteer fireman and plans on becoming a fully certified firefighter.
For now though, he’s just focusing on the 2015 qualifiers at the end of the month.
