Cullen calls for more aid, less military in Iraq

Conservative MPs in the House of Commons have approved a motion to join the war in Iraq.

After two days of debate, 155 Conservatives voted in favour of the motion, with the help of an Independent MP and a Green MP, while the NDP and the Liberals were opposed.

Speaking in parliament Tuesday, The NDP MP for Skeena and the Bulkley Valley – Nathan Cullen joined his party’s push to see more aid sent to Iraq than military.

Cullen noted several past Canadian operations where aid was sent without a military force, but feels there is a change in that philosophy, saying the government had spent $10 on the military for every $1 on aid spent in Afghanistan.

The motion calls for six Canadian fighter-bombers, two CP-140 surveillance planes, one refuelling aircraft and 600 personnel to join coalition air-strikes in Iraq for up to six months.
