UNBC Otway Nordic Legacy Scholarship fundraising target surpassed

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club and UNBC reached a big milestone today.

With the help of a $50k donation from Enbridge’s Northern Gateway project, the Otway Nordic Legacy Scholarship has pushed past its $150,000 goal.

Caledonia ski club president Kevin Pettersen says the scholarship is one of a kind in Canada;

“There is nowhere else in Canada that offers that support, specifically for a Nordic athlete. What we had found was that with our location here being so close to the university, it was an unprecedented opportunity to really draw athletics and academics together.”

Pettersen says they already have enough for a second smaller scholarship, and they are going to keep on fundraising for more;

“Today we’ve actually been able to achieve $180k. So the $150k will fund the full tuition scholarship forever, and every $30k block of funding we secure now funds a thousand dollar annual scholarship forever.”

UNBC matched and will continue to match any money raised by the ski club for the scholarship. Caledonia Ski Club members contributed over $40k to the goal.
