For Craig MacDonald, continuing his hockey journey in his own backyard was just too good to pass up.
The 17-year-old forward for the Cariboo Cougars will be suiting up next season for the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings.
He has 10 goals and 17 assists in his final season of major-midget hockey with the Cats who currently sit second in the BC Major Midget Hockey League with a record of 17-4-1-0, four points back of the Valley West Hawks.
You could say Christmas came early for MacDonald after receiving a two-game call-up last weekend by the Spruce Kings where he was a part of a pair of victories against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and the Wenatchee Wild.
He couldn’t be more thrilled to hit the ice with the team he grew up watching.
“It means a ton to me and with all the people that have helped me throughout the way, being a hometown guy playing with the local Junior A hockey team, you can’t really ask for much more than that. I’m really excited for the rest of this year and starting next year and with the Mac’s tournament coming up and the playoffs.”
After considering other possibilities, MacDonald thought it was best to continue his journey in the place where it all began.
“Honestly, it was just the right fit for me as the coaching staff was really good and I’ve been with them for a couple years going to their camps since I was a second-year bantam and it’s my hometown too and I just thought it was the right fit mostly because of the great coaching and general manager.”
“I’ve always been interested in going there and it ended up being one of those things where they have a great coach and great systems along with good teammates.”
Fellow Cariboo teammates Brennan Malgunas, Marcus Allen and Brandon Dent are also listed by the Spruce Kings.
Corey Cunningham is the only local product on the BCHL club’s active roster.
MacDonald will continue to serve as an affiliate player for the Spruce Kings on an as-needed basis.
