Donaldson says throne speech ignores bigger picture

The NDP MLA for Stikine found himself less confident after Monday’s throne speech to kick off the fall session.

New Democrat Doug Donaldson says the speech is an example of the government saying what people want to hear, without ever delivering on the promise.

“[Premier Clark] talks about ‘the land sustains us’ but this is a government that watched the Mount Polley tailings pond breach occur,” he says. “Looking at things like comprehensive, cumulative effects assessments of LNG projects in the Northwest. There are a lot of pipelines planned, but the government has rejected that.”

The BC Government and Services Employees Union is also criticizing Premier Clark for an unclear speech that doesn’t really tell where the province is headed with the LNG industry.

The throne speech comes as Petronas, a major player in Northwest LNG development has threatened to pull its proposed pipeline project, citing impatience with the government’s approval process and a lack of tax incentives.
