The College of New Caledonia Board of Governors has approved a tuition and mandatory fee increase for the 2018/19 year.
The two per cent jump is a way to address cost pressures and to help cover the colleges fixed cost.
Faculty Rep on the Board of Governors Mark Wendling voted to pass the motion to approve the increase, but was strongly against it.
“If we don’t vote for it, the government of the day may punish us going forward. And from what I understand from the last time, about ten years ago, when the college didn’t vote for an increase, it’s still brought up in discussions today that why should we give you this money you didn’t vote for an increase when you had the opportunity.”

Student Union Rep and Chairperson Kamal Bindra said in a statement that this puts a burden on students.
“It’s unfortunate that we have not been able to put a stop to increasing tuition fee every year. Cost of living and piling student debt is making education unaffordable for everyone, especially marginalized communities. I hope that our newly formed government would take initiatives to bring the bring the cost of education down in near future.”
The two per cent hike will contribute about $120,000 to the base operation fund.
CNC remains the second lowest tuition at a BC college for a full-time academic arts program student.
