City looks to apply for UBCM grant, purchase laptops

At Monday’s regular council meeting, council approved the City’s proposal to apply for a Union of BC Municipalities Community Emergency Preparedness Fund – Emergency Social Services grant.

The grant totals $24,000 and would go towards purchasing 12 new laptops.

Councillor Susan Scott says those were a hot commodity during the wildfire crisis over the summer.

“During the evacuation event, we discovered that freeing up computers was an interesting situation,” says Scott.

“We did utilize computers in a lab at CNC, but you can’t always rely on things like that.”

Councillor Albert Koehler echoes this, saying it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“Let’s be prepared and apply for a fund that’s worth doing,” he says.

“It’s to make sure that should this happen again, we are better prepared than we have in the past.”

The twelve laptops would improve with Prince George’s Emergency Social Services program, which currently only has one laptop computer.
