NDP not buying into fed's EI plan, or Liberals' alternative

The MP for Skeena – Bulkley Valley isn’t buying into the Liberals’ call for an alternative to the Conservative’s E-I plan.

Nathan Cullen with the NDP says despite the $200 incentive to hire versus the $2,000 incentive to fire employees, the Liberals’ proposal will make things even worse, costing a billion more than they expect, “with relatively minimal impact.,” he says.

“So, we’re not enthusiastic about it, we think there are much better ways than raiding the EI account, which is where all this money comes from, it’s all money that has been contributed by workers and employers,” Cullen says.

The Liberals are asking the Prime Minister to offer a full employment insurance premium exemption for every new job that a business creates.

They say a business would receive a benefit that can reach around $1,300 for every new job that they create.

The new EI rules go into effect January 1st, 2015.
