Two areas of the Cariboo, impacted by wildfires this summer, will be closed to moose hunting.
That announcement from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.
The areas impacted are Zones A and C, which is the area immediately north of Highway 20 and west of Williams Lake and Quesnel, that was impacted by the Plateau fire.
The closure is for the October 15th to 31st and November 1st to 15th seasons and applies to all licensed hunting, including resident and guided hunters.
The closure was recommended by ministry biologists to protect the moose population.
One person who is very happy with the decision is Chief Joe Alphonse, Tribal Chair of the Tsilhqot’in National Government.
He says he is ecstatic and calls it the right thing to do…
“This goes beyond effecting us, it effects wildfire there, you know we want to make sure that there are adequate levels of moose for generations to come. And at times like this, these are the steps that we have to take. We’ve all got to make sacrifices, we’ve all got to pitch in and I think this move is a step in the right direction. I honestly didn’t think the province was going to do this.”
Alphonse says this is a learning process for everyone as we have never seen anything like the wildfire season we just had.
