Thanksgiving is a time for family and to give thanks but for the St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP), it’s a time to give to the community.

For over 30 years, the organization has held a Thanksgiving dinner for those less fortunate.

“We’re trying to lift people’s spirits,” explains Bernie Goold, SVDP Chair.

For the last 10 years, SVDP has gotten help from the College of New Caledonia (CNC) as students and chefs from the school help prepare the meal.

“Anyone who is homeless or alone and cannot have a turkey dinner are being treated to a first-class meal by CNC.”

Goold says she started as a dishwasher with the organization and the generosity of people never ceases to amaze her.

“Afterwards I pinch myself and say ‘how did we pull this off?'” Goold says.

“It’s all the background people, the people who donate money for the food, they make this possible.”
