There was a small gathering, including representatives from BC Hydro, CN, and Tree Canada, in front of City Hall Wednesday as Acting Mayor Garth Frizzell made the announcement for new planting programs.
“Trees form the foundation of our economy and so many local residents enjoy recreation in the forest, so it’s fitting to have this announcement on National Tree Day,” says Frizzell.

With support from BC Hydro and the CN EcoConnexions program, 150 new trees will be added to Prince George.
That number also coincides with Canada 150.
There is an added significance to the types of trees being added.
“There’s maple trees, of course representing Canada, dogwood, representing BC,” Frizzell explains. “Important to us as well, we wanted to represent the growing partnership we’ve got with First Nations, so we’ve got the birch tree.”
Other trees being added are fruitless crab-apple, lilac, and buckeye.
Between 50-60 trees will be planted around the CN Centre parking lot, along 18th Avenue and Ospika Boulevard; and 90 trees will be planted in the median on Ospika between Ferry Avenue and Massey Drive.
The total contribution for the new trees is approximately $27,000.
