De Jong a welcomed addition to BC Liberal leadership race: Rustad

Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad issued a response on former finance minister Mike de Jong joining the race to become the BC Liberals, next leader.

Rustad is at the UBCM Convention in Vancouver this week.

He believes his fellow colleague will strengthen a very experienced candidate pool.

“Mike de Jong entering the race of course as a veteran add a tremendous amount of experience in the various portfolios as well as the leadership roles is a welcomed addition to the race.”

Despite working closely with de Jong for several years, Rustad says he isn t leaning one way or the other for any of the candidates.

“I am neutral in this race at this particular point and what I am telling the people in my riding is to get an opportunity to hear from the candidates, see who comes out to the area and they all have good skill sets.”

Other candidates include former Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan, former Conservative MP, Dianne Watts and past Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson.

As for the Liberals attempts to reclaim power in the BC Legislature, Rustad says it all starts with making the party more inclusive.

“We need to make the tent ever bigger, we need to make sure that the BC Liberals are reflective of a broad coalition of support that we have across this province and we need to make sure that we present a vision and a plan in the next election.”

The BC Liberal party will hold a leadership convention to announce the new leader on February 3rd, 2018.
