Clark & Fassbender champion a 6 year deal with the BCTF

Christy Clark and Peter Fassbender spoke to the media today about the tentative agreement reached early this morning between the BCTF and government.

Neither would speak to the specifics of the deal but Clark championed it as a 6 year deal that taxpayers could afford;

“Five years of labour peace ahead of us. Those are five years in which we can spend our time, rather than bargaining … and being in a constant state of moving from one bargaining session to the next. We’ll have five years where we can sit and talk about the things that really matter; improving education for children in classrooms”

Peter Fassbender also assured reporters that the lost school weeks will be made up one way or another;

“The bottom line is, we have guaranteed that every students educational journey in this school year will be kept whole. Especially true for grade 11 and 12 students, the details will be announced as we move forward, there are plans being put into place right now.”

Both Christy Clark and Fassbender thanked the BCTF and negotiators repeatedly for “give and take” during negotiations.

Teachers will be voting on the deal 1pm Thursday at the PG Civic Centre with the possibility of schools opening on Monday.

BCTF President Jim Iker is scheduled to speak to the media at 430.
