Young enters professional ranks, signs with Cubs

A Northern BC slugger has officially joined the big leagues!

Prince George’s own Jared Young signed his first professional contract with the Chicago Cubs, the team who selected him in the 15th round, 465th overall of the MLB Draft.

The second baseman calls the experience, surreal.

“A lot of hard work into this. To finally have it work in my favour and have everything pan out is just crazy. Chicago really lets you get your feet under you and get a feel for the professional level before they throw you out anywhere. You just need to have faith in yourself, and the organization knows what they’re doing.”

The 21-year-old scribbled on the dotted line with the defending World Series champions while attending player development camp in Arizona this week.

He says his family, all residing in Prince George, sent multiple messages and voicemails when they heard of his signing.

“Everyone was pretty thrilled honestly,” said Young with a chuckle.

“I got my mom, my dad, my brother Tanner, and my Grandpa Lyle; they’re all pretty pumped for me, and it’s a pretty cool, unique support system I’ve got.”

Young finished atop of 11 offensive categories, including home runs, with the NCAA’s Old Dominion Monarchs in Virginia this past season.

He also earned All-Academic and All-American rankings.
