Muriatic acid leak prompts a large response

Prince George Fire and Rescue were tied up late last night and early this morning identifying a unknown substance leaking out of the rear of a commercial vehicle in the 1500 block of the Hart Hwy.

Fire Chief John Iverson says that in addition to 14 firefighters from three halls, a five person HazMat team was on the scene as well as a member of the Ministry of Environment

“We responded with our HazMat trailer, with our HazMat technicians to the scene.” Iverson says, “They are our local experts on the ground here. They work in conjunction with the CANUTEC (Canadian Transport Emergency Centre) staff at the Ministry of Transport and the Government of Canada”

After seven hours the product was identified as Muriatic acid which was reacting with the bed of the truck and asphalt creating a vapour cloud.

The acid was then contained and neutralized shortly afterwards.
