Vanderhoof teacher seeks MP nomination

A Vanderhoof teacher has put his name forward as a contender for a federal seat in the Cariboo-Prince George riding.

Gerald Caron says he is seeking a nomination for the Conservative race, although the the current MP, Dick Harris has never said he plans to give up his seat.

Even so, Caron says Harris is an MP he wishes to emulate the most.

“Mr. Harris has been very good at listening to the concerns of the people when they had a small issue with the federal government,” he says. “They could go to his office and that issue was looked after, wether it was by himself, or his staff. That’s what I think the role of parliament is.”

Caron admits he is an admirer of Harris, and his lone-wolf stance on the New Prosperity mine near Williams Lake that has been rejected by government twice.

“I’m in favour of Prosperity mine, the same way as Mr. Harris is, even though the party has declined that mine going forward,” he says. “So, I’m in line with Mr. Harris on that.”

Caron states “Other than that project, I don’t have an opinion.”

Given the mine activity in the area, he says the Likely tailings pond disaster isn’t the government’s responsibility, asking “Wouldn’t you think that the role of those that need to fix the problem are within our society?”

“Whether they are the mine people that are operating or the other staff and people that deal with those things, not really the government,” he says.
