New MRI machine up and running at UHNBC

There’s a brand new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine in town.

The replacement of the University Hospital of Northern BC’s 14-year old unit is now complete. The new unit offers significantly upgraded technology and will help improve local service – it should increase the number of scans performed by the hospital by 1,000 per year.

It’s the first of three MRI installations taking place across the Northern Health Authority. Two other new machines will be installed at Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace, and Fort St. John Hospital & Health Centre.

The new units will triple the number MRI units in use by Northern Health and will go into service this summer and fall. Each machine is already slated to do 2,000 scans in its first year of operation.
