Gitxsan First Nation extends eviction deadline

With a deadline arriving today, the Gitxsan first nation has extended the suspension of eviction orders on their land.

Near the beginning of August the band evicted hunters, fisherman and CN rail from their land in protest of a land deal neighbouring bands were cooking up with the government.

Following talks with the crown, the eviction orders were withdrawn shortly afterwards. Today that was extended.

Negotiator Beverly Clifton Percival says they are waiting for the process to work itself out.

“We have suspended the eviction” She says, “Because we want to show that we are being reasonable and we are giving the process time to see where it can take us and hopefully it comes to a positive resolution.”

The new deadline now sits on September 16th.
