Crews are still busy in the Prince George Fire Centre, battling an ongoing series of blazes.
Information Officer Susie Lassek says 12 new fires started this past weekend, all but four were caused by lightning, though they are all being dealt with.
She says there are currently five large fires of note in the region.
Over the last 10 years, Lassek points out that the PG area averages 285 fires a year costing 7 point 8 million, though this year has seen 314 fires so far, at a cost over 43 million dollars.
“The high cost this year is due to the large fires that require sustained action over a number of weeks,” she says. “For example, the Mt. McAlister fire near Chetwynd currently has over 117 fire fighters, 13 helicopters, 15 pieces of heavy equipment, and another 100 fire fighters arriving [Monday]”
“We haven’t had any significant lightning in the last 24 hours,” Lassek says. “Over the next week, of course we are expecting it to be hot and dry, we don’t see too much precipitation happening over the next few days, so we’re just asking if the public can jeep aware and stay away from active wildfires.”
