The head of the local Steelworkers Union is reacting to news of stiff fines issued against Lakeland Mills.
“First and foremost, I hope and pray we never have another accident of this magnitude again,” says President Frank Everitt of Local 1-424, who isn’t sure how Worksafe decided upon their $724,000 figure to fine Lakeland Mills.
He says it won’t amount to full satisfaction for victims’ families.
“From their perspective, you know full well that no amount of money satisfies that loss that they’ve received, or the injuries they’ve received,” he says.
Worksafe’s fines are for the workers compensation act and health and safety violations.
Lakeland says they will fully review Worksafe’s allegations before deciding on whether or not to file an appeal.
