RDFFG addressing rural needs in letter to Education Ministry

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is writing to the Ministry of Education’s Review of Rural Education with suggestions to improve schools in the area.

Spokesperson Art Kaehn believes rural communities have unique needs. First and foremost, he says it’s vital students get a better internet connection.

“Then they’ve got access to the same information that their counterparts do in their urban areas, so it’s huge,” he says, “it’s important not only in the classroom but it’s also important in their communities.”

Other themes of the submission include allowing schools to be used as community centres. Kaehn would also like to see more specific training for teachers headed to smaller towns.

“Educators in the last 30-40 years have been taught to teach a one-grade classroom and now many of them are entering into these multiple grade classrooms.”

The Ministry of Education is taking feedback from districts all over the province.

Ministry representatives are headed to Prince George on Wednesday to hold a rural education open house.
