Prince George Youth Action Team tackling mental health stigma

The Prince George Youth Action Team is reaching out to teens and young children in the city.

The group is finding ways to support kids and families dealing with mental health and substance abuse challenges.

Team Lead Julia MacDonald says these two issues are at the forefront of health.

“It’s really to give youth a voice and let them say ‘we’re here and we want to reduce stigma’ and reach out to their peers.”

The team has a few methods to reduce the prejudice attached to mental illness, which include a media campaign, and training programs. Another method is creating a “youth approved” certification checklist with along with other local groups.

“So that these organisations could see what youth would need for services around mental health and this is what they’re comfortable with. just to really give the youth a voice in that.”

The group made a presentation to City Council last week, hoping to start a partnership with the city. It’s a part of it’s goal to make partnerships and a sustainable supportive infrastructure in Prince George.
