Vanderhoof Co-op donates $5,000 to Nechako View Senior Citizens Housing Society

The Nechako View Seniors Citizens Housing Society has received some financial aid to build a new affordable housing complex for seniors.

The Vanderhoof and Districts Co-op has donated $5,000 to the society for 14 new units on Burrard Avenue and Douglas Street.

Co-op General Manager Allan Bieganski says the society is one of 11 organizations to be on the receiving end of their 2016 Community Support Fund.

“They have done such great work in other seniors complexes in this town and they do great work, and we really look forward to supporting their cause and starting this next group of housing projects that they’re working on.”

Bieganski adds Nechako View has had a great impact on the community.

“We’re looking for groups that will have an impact in improving the quality of life in the various communities in which we operate. Providing low-income housing to seniors is definitely a very worth while effort.”

President of the Housing Society and former Vanderhoof Mayor Len Fox says 45 people are already on the waiting list for the $1.7 million complex and hopes to reduce that number.

“That’s what we’re out to achieve. We’ll only be building another 14 units, but we’re hopeful that the private sector, at some point, will step up and build some more units.”

The area of development will allow seniors to have access to the downtown core and ease the strain on the rental market.
