Edgewood PAC wants a sidewalk

The Edgewood Parent Advisory Council asked city council for a fully-funded sidewalk and gutter near along Churchill Road at last night’s meeting.

The community, including young students, have to walk on the edge of the road, something parents like Sarah Foot worry about all the time.

“I have two sons one in kindergarten and one in grade two. The access for them to the school is along Churchill and that’s used not only by pedestrians but also by the traffic,” she says, “The roads are quite narrow and with winter conditions it can be quite challenging and (there are) lots of safety concerns.”

Foot was one of the presenters. She also came to the chambers with 6 letters a petition with 95 signatures on it, all supporting the project. The area also has new buildings going up which she believes will lead to even more traffic. Edgewood Elementary has also reached its nominal capacity of 220 students.

Council showed support for it but realises there are some issues that need to be addressed. The project is expected to cost about $240,000, which is almost all of money the city budgets for sidewalk projects every year.

Staff will look it over and it will be considered for next year’s budget.
