IIO BC investigating a death in police custody in Prince George

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been called in to investigate after a man died while in the custody of the Prince George RCMP.

At 11:34 pm on Sunday, November 20, RCMP were called to the 100 block of Quebec St. after a reported disturbance. They located a man who appeared to be intoxicated on the 1200 block of 2nd Avenue and arrested him for being drunk in a public place. He was taken to the RCMP Detachment and lodged in a cell.

A cell check just after 2 am on Monday morning found the individual unresponsive and RCMP members began CPR. Emergency Health Services were called but were unable to revive the man. He was pronounced deceased shortly before 3 am.

IIO BC was notified and have begun an investigation to determine if there is a connection between the man’s death and the actions of the RCMP. The Prince George RCMP has also initiated an Independent Officer Review, as per protocol.

As the investigation is underway, no other information is available at this time.
