New downtown parking rules go into effect Monday morning

The City of Prince George’s new parking rules are about to kick in.

A city vehicle has been outfitted with License Plate Recognition technology and it’s ready to roll on Monday morning.

“7am, downtown parking is a 3 hour zone anywhere that’s signed,” says Bylaw Services Manager Fred Crittenden. “If we haven’t changed the signs it won’t be in effect there. We’re going to start using this in the downtown zone as well as the pay by plate lots.”

Crittenden has one tip for city residents who spend a lot of time parked downtown.

“If you’re an all day parker downtown, move off the street. We still have more capacity for more people to move off street. We have 340 stalls still available in our parkade.”

Residents of the downtown area covered by the new rules will have a few weeks grace as the city figures out a permitting process.

New parking kiosks in off-street parking lots are also part of the City’s new downtown parking plan. As part of the prep for the roll out of the new license plate recognition technology, the City has been installing new kiosks since September.

“We’re seeing, on average, about 200 transactions a day at the 6 machines. 80% of those are all day purchases. We’re also seeing about 35% of our transactions are credit card transactions.”

Parking in the lots costs 75 cents per hour or $4 for the entire day.

The kiosks take cash or credit card and require a license plate.
