BC Children’s Hospital has Trick-or-Treating tips to keep your kids safe this Halloween

Your little ones will be trick-or-treating tomorrow, and the BC Children’s Hospital wants them to be safe.

The hospital’s Trauma Program Manager Lisa Romein recommends being super cautious.

“Kids are excited. It’s an exciting time and they get distracted, so they can make mistakes. Make sure you stay together and you hold the hands of the younger ones.”

Visibility is one of her biggest concerns, so she also recommends wearing bright clothing or reflective wear (tape, buttons, lights). If a costume has a vision-restricting mask she asks you consider using face paint instead.

If your kids are a little older, she advises you know their routes, and that they have a fully-charged phone on them.

She also has a reminder for drivers.

“Be extra careful that there are extra kids out there who are distracted and might make a mistake so if everyone could us extra caution, especially when backing in and out of driveways as well.”

Monday night should be chilly and wet, so Romein suggests dressing appropriately for the weather.

Lastly, once you’re at home, she suggests checking your kid’s candy before they – or you – eat anything.
