The provincial government continues to roll out improvements for the Highway 16 corridor.
“We’re moving forward with another critical 4-laning project here on Highway 16,” says Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone. “So I’m very pleased to announce on behalf of the government of British Columbia that the project to 4-lane Highway 16 from Buntz Rd to 200m east of Bunce Road is now going to tender this December.”
The $24 million project will also include additional passing lanes and improvements to several intersections along the highway.
“In addition to the 4-laning work on the highway, the project will include some critical upgrades at intersections, specifically the intersections at Buntzen and Gauthier Roads, Haldi Road and Buckingham and Blackwater and Sykes Roads.”
The project is scheduled to begin next summer and will hopefully be finished by the fall of 2018.
“When completed, the project will improve the safety and capacity of Highway 16 for those travelling to and from BC’s northwest and for those who rely on this corridor for their daily commute into Prince George.”
Lara Beckett with the Regional District the project will make a difference for residents and commercial drivers alike.
“I’m really pleased to see this because I’ve been hearing from residents, coming from the Beaverly area particularly, we’ve got a pretty high density population there that takes this highway in and out several times a day, every day. Having the four lanes into the city is going to make the commute a lot easier and a lot safer. I would say about ⅓ of the vehicles are big trucks so having an extra lane, it’s going to give everybody a lot more breathing space and room.”
The provincial government is providing nearly $14 million for the project, with the City adding $600,000 and the federal government covering the rest.
