Illegal dumping still a problem

Illegally dumped waste is still an ongoing problem in the city, but the BC Conservation Officer Service is seeing a dip in the number of incidents.

Local Conservation Officer Eamon McArthur says there were 86 files created last year, and only 38 so far in 2016. The latest numbers suggest there’s less total illegally dumped waste this year, although the weight hasn’t been calculated.

Last year, the City of Prince George collected 29,670 kilograms (kg) of waste. The five-year trend also shows the problem is growing.

McArthur asks you to call the COS if you see any illegal waste.

“If we’re out there and we find one, we create the file but if people don’t report the unlawful dump site, and we don’t find it, it’s just an unlawful dump site that doesn’t find itself into the system.”

Getting caught illegally dumping will cost you. McArthur says fines start around $115 and can run up to $575 with a court appearance.
